Cromdale 3-3 RBL Aviemore - McCook Cup Final
Cromdale win 4-3 on penalties

Congratulations to Cromdale FC on winning the first item of domestic silverware in 2008, narrowly defeating RBL in last night's McCook Cup Final.

RBL took the lead in a blustery first half through a Brian Minard strike, but Cromdale soon levelled thanks to Ryan McConnachie. Cromdale then went ahead just before the break with a wonder strike from welfare veteran Gavin Green.

Shortly after the re-start Cromdale increased their lead with a half volley from Graham Murray, but RBL came fighting back with an unstoppable shot from Jamie Stewart with 15 minutes left. And then in the dying minutes Minard struck his second to level the scores and force extra time.

Due to bad light the referee decided to go straight to penalties where Cromdale triumphed 4-3 to win the first trophy of the season much to the victorious manager Gavin Taylor's delight.

**IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT **

The Strathspey & Badenoch Welfare FA has just received official confirmation from Strathspey Thistle Junior Football Club manager Donny McLeod that NO SIGNED PLAYERS are to be realised early from their contracts in order to play Welfare football until the end of the Junior season - apart from Scott Smith who was released in March 2008.

Therefore ALL clubs must ensure they not DO NOT play any signed Strathspey Thistle players (not even as "trailist" in league matches) until SBWFA Registration Secretary, Rob A. Clark, receives in writing from Strathspey Thistle a detailed list of players to be released or who can play under freedom of contract. Once we receive this list it shall be posted on the web site and emailed out to all clubs

And in other news, Carr-bridge have been forced to forfeit tonight's Highland Welfare Cup match with Hill Rovers due to their inability to raise a team through injury, plus the very tight 7pm kick off at Fort George meaning several players would've been unable to get home from work on time to make it all the way there.

22 April 2008

Tonight was the first week of league action, and the results were as follows:

Aviemore Thistle 1 - 2 RBL
Scorers: Ritchie (Aviemore), McFee & McIntyre (both RBL)

Cromdale 2 - 4 Carr-bridge

Tomatin 5 -1 Tomatin Utd

21 April 2008

It's now been confirmed that Carr-bridge will play Hill Rovers FC in the Highland Welfare Cup on Thursday 24 April at Culloden Public Parks. Kick off at 7pm. Unfortunately however Aviemore Thistle's involvement has come to an end as the tie was just too short notice for them to get a team together and so they've reluctantly had to withdraw from the competition.

And on the domestic front, all SBWFA clubs are reminded that pink copy player registration forms MUST be handed in to the Association secretary, stamped and dated, by this Friday AT THE LATEST. There can be no exceptions otherwise players will be ineligible to compete. Clubs are also reminded to use the standard team line for all games, which is available from the downloads section of this site (or by clicking here.)

20 April 2008

A very unlucky Tomatin were yesterday narrowly defeated 2-1 in the Highland Welfare Cup final against McNabs at Borough Briggs. Kenny MacDonald was the man on target for Tomatin.

And keeping with the Highland Welfare Cup, the draw for this year's competition has been made and those ties involving SBWFA clubs are shown below:

Hopeman FC  v  Aviemore Thistle (winners home to Chieftain on or before 18 May)
Hill Rovers FC   v  Carr-bridge (winners home to Lossie Inn or Merkinch on or before 18 May)
(Both ties to be played by 24 April)

Cromdale & Tomatin received byes to the last 16 where they will face:

Tomatin  v Keyss FC
Cromdale  v  Uncle Bobs FC
(Both ties to be played by 8 June)

Once dates have been finalised we'll post them up here.

18 April 2008

Tonight was semi-final night in the McCook Cup, and RBL's unexpected return to the competition saw them progress into next Friday's final by disposing of Carr-bridge 4-3 at home. The other finalists will be the resurgent Cromdale who saw off Aviemore Thistle 3-2 at home.

We would also like to wish our own Tomatin FC all the very best in tomorrow's Highland Welfare Cup Final in Elgin. They've already done the SBWFA proud by getting to the final, so here's hoping they go all the way and return home with the silverware. Good luck lads!

16 April 2008

Carr-bridge will now meet RBL in Friday's McCook Cup semi-final due to Tomatin withdrawing from the competition last night. As they are playing in the Highland Welfare Cup Final on Saturday, Tomatin had asked for the McCook Cup match to be played on Sunday instead. Unfortunately this was not possible due to many of Carr-bridge's squad having other committments at the weekend. RBL were therefore reinstated and have now replaced Tomatin in the competition.

15 April 2008

That's the season underway now with the preliminary round of the McCook Cup contested this evening. Tomatin beat RBL 2-1 whilst Cromdale despatched Tomatin Utd 5-1. This now sees Tomatin take on Carr-bridge in one semi final, and Cromdale play host to Aviemore Thistle.

14 April 2008

The season kicks off tomorrow, however club reps are reminded that an Association meeting is taking place tonight at the Cairn Hotel, Carr-bridge at 7:30pm. Delegates' attendance would be welcome as normal.

3 April 2008

It was RBL's turn for pre-season action last night as they took on Grantown FC in a rearanged fixture. A high scoring game saw the Aviemore side run out 6-4 winners. This was a welcome return to action for the Legion following the postponement of Sunday's game with Cromdale.
