NEWS JULY 2008

31 July 2008

Champions Carr-bridge have been forced to end their season early by withdrawing from Friday's Tomatin Utd Cup tie with Aviemore Thistle due to having only 7 players available. This sees the Jags advance into Tuesday's semi final where they'll face Tomatin. However it's still hoped that the David Ritchie & Sons shield will be presented on Friday at a special photo call.

30 July 2008

Now the dust has settled after last night's exciting finale to this year's league campaign, there's still the matter of Tomatin Utd's cup to be played for. Carr-bridge win the League!

Due to Aviemore Thistle being unable to field a full team tonight, Tomatin were awarded a 3-0 win. This meant the title showdown went to the wire when joint 2nd RBL played host to 1st place Carr-bridge. And in a night of high drama, a very healthy crowd watched Carr-bridge triumph 3-1 to be crowned Champions for the first time in years.

Congratulations to all at Carr-bridge, and well done to all the other clubs for making 2008 a truly memorable League campaign. The full scores were:

Tomatin 3-0 Aviemore Thistle
Cromdale 4-5 Tomatin Utd
RBL 1-3 Carr-bridge.

Only 1 more day left until the big League Championship decider!

The SBWFA urge as many supporters as possible to go along and watch your local sides in action, especially tomorrow as it's going to be an evening of high drama. This is the closest finish to a season in many years, and who knows - it may still go down to a deciding match like last season. But whatever happens, it's been a fantastic league campaign, but don't forget there's still one final trophy left to play for after Tuesday so there's still plenty of action to be watched.

25 July 2008

Congratulations go to Aviemore Thistle tonight for winning the Dalvey Cup Final 5-1 over Tomatin. No doubt this scoreline will be of great interest to RBL and Carr-bridge given that Thistle and Tomatin meet again in Tuesday's League decider. However, the night belongs to the Jags so well done to them.

And in a curious twist, from 5 cup finals played this season, 5 seperate winners have emerged. This just serves to highlight the gloriously unpredictable nature of the 2008 season.

22 July 2008

It was another evening of high drama in the League title race as the leadership swapped hands once again, and set up a spectacular grandstand finish next Tuesday to this year's League campaign. A minute's silence was impecably observed before each game in memory of the late George Niven, and the subsequent onfield action merely served to enhance matters.

The top-of-the-table clash between RBL and Tomatin ended all square, allowing Carr-bridge to leapfrog into top spot by a point after scraping past basement side Tomatin Utd. The full scores were:

Cromdale 5 - 8 Aviemore Thistle
Tomatin Utd 2 - 3 Carr-bridge
RBL 2 - 2 Tomatin

George Niven
1929 - 2008

The SBWFA was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of one of Scotland's greatest ever goalkeepers, George Niven.

In a career which spanned the 50s and 60s, George was a regular fixture in goals for Rangers where he won five League Championship, two Scottish Cups and one League Cup, making 327 appearances for the club, before moving to Partick Thistle where he joined what is probably the finest Jags team in their entire history. In addition to this, George was also capped for Scotland in 1960.

After his retirement from senior football, George settled in Dulnain Bridge where he continued to play in the SBWFA League well into his 50s. After finally hanging-up his boots, George continued to be an avid supporter of our League, and took in last season's play-off between Tomatin and Aviemore Thistle as a spectator.

As a mark of respect for this remarkable man, there will be a minute's silence before each SBWFA game on Tuesday night. We also take this opportunity to extend our condolences to the Niven family, and thank them for George's glorious contribution to the game we all love.

15 July 2008

There was no change in the top 3 for the first time in weeks tonight as Tomatin, RBL and Carr-bridge all won. The full list of results is given below:

Tomatin Utd 3-7 RBL
Aviemore Thistle 0-2 Carr-bridge
Cromdale 0-3 Tomatin (match awarded as a 3-0 win due to Cromdale forfeiting.

15 July 2008

It's another big evening for the David Ritchie & Sons League, as with just 3 games left to go of the campaign only 1 point separates the top 3 sides. So tonight's games should go some way towards deciding whether the title goes to Carr-bridge, Tomatin or RBL. Or then again they may just provide another twist in the tale!

However, due to holidays we cannot guarantee this site will be updated right after the final whistles as normal. We will try to get some kind of update done though so please bear with us.

12 July 2008

0 - 5

The SBWFA select XI gave a good account of themselves this afternoon, but eventually succumbed to the superior opposition. The gulf between Welfare Football and the Highland League eventually took its toll as Rothes ran-out 5-0 winners on the day. However it was an excellent experience for all those SBWFA players involved, and we wish Rothes FC every success in their forthcoming Highland League campaign.

11 July 2008

Tomatin eventually managed to overcome 10-man RBL in tonight's Dalvey Cup match 3-2 after extra time, and will now face Cromdale in next Friday's semi final.

Supporters are also reminded that there's a friendly tomorrow between a SBWFA select XI and a Rothes FC XI from the Highland League. The game is being played in Carr-bridge and kicks off at 3pm. All are invited to pop along and spectate.

11 July 2008

Tonight's Dalvey Cup 1st Round match between Carr-bridge and Aviemore Thistle will not now take place due to Carr-bridge being unable to field a full team. The tie has therefore been awarded to Thistle, who will now face Tomatin Utd in next Friday's semi-final.

8 July 2008

Before we mention tonight's scores, the SBWFA would firstly like to make a statement regarding the recent spate of fixtures having no referees attend. There have been 4 such occasions in the past few weeks, one of which was an error on the part of the referee organiser as he omitted to reorganise a previously assigned fixture. Another was when a referee had to call off at short notice and a replacement could not be found. However two further games were allocated to match officials, but in each case these referees failed to show.

We completely understand how annoying this is for the clubs involved, but it is also very upsetting for the organiser who has spent a great deal of time and effort ensuring each game has had a referee in place some weeks before it is due to be played. We simply cannot legislate for match officials not turning up, and due to the high demand for referees at this time of year, getting a replacement at short notice is next to impossible. All we can do is assure you that we do our absolute best to ensure each and every game has an appointed referee, but this is an issue we'll take up with NOSRA in due course.

Now back to tonight's the action. Tomatin have held onto top spot in the League, however RBL have jumped over Carr-bridge into second, but only 1 point separates all 3 teams! A truly exciting last 3 League games of 2008 are assured. The full scores were:

Carr-bridge 3 - 3 Tomatin
RBL 3 - 2 Cromdale
Tomatin Utd 4 - 8 Aviemore Thistle

4 July 2008

Congratulations to RBL on winning tonight's Caldwell Cup Final. Opponents Carr-bridge were never really in the running and in the end RBL cruised home to a deserved 3-0 win and lift their first item of silverware for the season. The winning team is pictured below with the trophy.

And a very special thank you to off-duty referee Andy Masson who stepped in to officiate the game (in his jeans and work boots!) when the scheduled ref failed to show. We were just very fortunate he happened to pop by to watch the game, so thanks Andy!

3 July 2008

The friendly between Rothes FC of the Highland League and a SBWFA select XI has been confirmed as taking place on Saturday the 12th July at Carr-bridge. We'll provide a more detailed analysis of this game nearer the time.

1 July 2008
